1. What we do
www.tabal.org is a fundraising platform for everyone. For people who want to donate to a specific project. For people who have time and want to spend it helping trustworthy relief projects. It is also for non-govermental organizations (NGO) that don't have a big enough budget for an expensive web campaign but do have the time setting up projects in the poorer regions of the world.

Our goal is to create a direct and uncomplicated way for you to choose trustworthy
ZEWO certified projects and support them. The organizations that are not ZEWO certified are organizations that we trust and comply with normal NGO auditing practices.

With tabal.org you can choose a project and donate money to a specific person or project. As soon as your project is fully financed, your donation is transferred to the recipient. You can then follow up on the progress of the project by checking the website under 'Financed Projects' or logging into your account.

You can also become a fundraiser and in your free time encourage your family and friends to visit your own personal tabal profile page and donate to one of your favorite projects.

90% of the donation that you make goes directly to the project you have chosen. 3% goes to the credit card fee and 7% goes to NGO for their administrative costs.

The online payments are run through Paypal/Credit Card or the post's Yellowworld. Our payment methods are secure.

2. Donate

1. Search for and pick a project that you want to support.
2. Choose an amount and your preferred currency.
3. You can amend or erase your choices at any time in the checkout.
4. When you have made your choices then go to the checkout.
5. You can pay with your credit cards through PAYPAL or with your POSTCARD (Yellowworld).
6. You can order a 'tax deduction' receipt from the relief organization.
7. We transfer the money to the relief organization that is responsible for your project.
8. The relief organization uses the money for the project that you chose and later posts updates on our website so that you can track the progress your project has made.
9. To make tracking your projects easier you can register an anonymous account where all your projects are listed.

3. Fundraiser

1. Register your own personal profile page.
2. You can then upload a photo of yourself and fill out the information you want displayed on your page.
3. Choose the projects that you want to support and add them to your personal profile page. You will find a link button on the project description that says 'I want to support this project'. Push it and it will be added to your page.
4. Give out your tabal address to your friends and relatives. They can then visit your personal profile page, pick out a project and make a donation through you.

You now have your own tabal fundraising page that you can work for on your own time!

5. The Idea

'After editing various documentaries about the lives of mothers on the African continent I began to formulate an idea about how mothers could help mothers. I began to realize that I have more things in common with other mothers then I do with say a banker or an advertising executive. Because all mothers must feed their kids, raise them, and worry about their future. After discussing this with some friends I realized that everybody had their own priorities. I wanted to help mothers, but one person wanted to help the environment, and another just animals. So the idea for a web platform that could help all types of projects was born. You could say we designed tabal to satisfy our own needs.' Hedi Bäbler

6. The Organization

Our organization exists under the name 'Verein Helptrust' and is registered in Zurich, Switzerland. Article 60ff of the Civil Statutes of Switzerland (ZGB). You can read our charter in the footer on the home page. Tabal is religiously and politically neutral.

Mastercard, Visa, and Paypal are all run through Paypal services.
Of course it is also possible to pay using a bank transfer. Please inform us at info@tabal.org if this is your only possible payment method.

Transaction costs

8. Tax Deductions

Tabal is not a relief organization, but an internet platform. Therefore the receipt for your tax deduction will be provided for by the NGO. At the checkout on tabal you will be asked if you want to receive a receipt from the NGO either by mail or email. Your name and address will be secure.

9. The Financing

The basic principle of tabal is that the donations do not end up with us, but with the recipient. Therefore we are dependent on sponsors to cover our costs. Any sponsor we do receive will be listed on the tabal website. Tabal also accepts donations for our maintanence and can be done in the checkout section on tabal.

10. Our Partners

We work together with ZEWO certified and reliable NGOs that have long standing ties in the developing world. Our partners bring the experience and know-how. They are also responsible for finding the individual projects that appear on tabal.org, managing those projects and eventually updating tabal.org on the status of the projects.

You can find out more about our partners here.

11. Projects
Many NGOs are involved with long-term projects that are often large and complex. Since we want to provide you with the ability to track your money you will only be financing a piece of a larger project. That does not mean that the rest of the larger project is not being financed. All NGO's have alternative fundraising methods and tabal.org is just one of them.

You can find out more about the entire project on the partner page.

12. FAQs

1. What is a Tabal fundraiser?

There are two ways you can use Tabal.

You can view all of the projects, choose one that is closest to your heart and donate directly to it. You remain anonymous.

You can also become a Tabal fundraiser. This means that you create your own profile page, choose the projects that you want to support and then raise money from your circle of friends and family. Every donation that is made through your profile page is logged to your account.

2. Why do I only see 30 projects at once?

We do not want to have many un-financed projects cluttering the website, so we decided to only list 30 projects at a time. As soon as a project is financed another project from our pool is automatically listed.

3. How do I follow my project?

You can search for your project under 'financed projects' or you can log onto your account and check your projects. There are two kind of accounts, a private one and a public one. With the private one, only you can see the projects that you are supporting. With a public accoount or as we call it a fundraiser page, your accoount is actually your own personal profile page. Anybody can log on and check out the projects you support as well as make a donation through your page.

4. What is a sub-project?

Many of our partner organizations have large projects, which are harder to track on the Tabal portal. Therefore Tabal has created the sub-project (a piece of a larger project). This sub-project is now small enough and can be followed and managed on Tabal.

5. When money is donated to a sub-project does the money actually go to that sub-project?

Yes, the donation goes directly to that sub-project.

6. Will only some individuals be helped from a larger project while others receive nothing?

No. If a sub-project is financed through Tabal, the rest of the larger project can be financed through other fundraising methods or through other sub-projects on Tabal.

7. Is tabal.org a relief organization?

No, tabal.org is an internet platform, which hosts NGO (non-governmental organizations) relief projects on its website.

8. How does tabal.org finance itself?

We are looking for commercial sponsors, whom we will list on our Website.

9. Can I support tabal.org with a donation?

We are of the opinion that the donations should go there where they are most needed. But you can make an additional donation to Tabal when you are at the checkout. Also any other kind of help is greatly appreciated. So feel free to organize a tabal party, print tabal T-Shirts, create tabal ice-cream or start a tabal group. We are happy to hear about any new ideas.

10. Why is 10% of the donation deducted?

Unfortunately we cannot completely eliminate the credit card fees. We are working on finding a sponsor to absorb these costs. This is 3% for each donation.

The other 7% is for the administrative costs of the NGO. The 7% is used to keep the NGO's in business, particularly the smaller ones that need the money to realize their projects. Normal administrative costs for an NGO can run as high as 40% .

11. Can I deduct the donation from my taxes?

Tabal.org is not a NGO and does not have tax deduction authorization. You can however choose to receive a receipt from the NGO that you supported through tabal.org. The NGO's are not allowed to use your address for mailings or advertising purposes or to give it to a third party.

12. What happens if I pay in a currency other then the one listed?

Tabal.org converts the currency as listed on the standard currency exchange and it is then transferred to the recipient.

13. Who are our partner organization?

Our partner organizations are ZEWO certified relief organizations that have been engaged in development and relief for years. If an NGO is not ZEWO certfied then we make sure that they are above board and comply with standard auditing practices for NGOs.

14. According to what criteria are the NGOs selected?

Our goal is to support many types of development assistance. We support projects that interest us and also maintain a high degree of transparency in their bookkeeping. It is of lesser importance as to what kind of worldview the NGO has. Basically we look for organizations that we can be proud to support.

15. How do I know that I can trust the NGO?

Most of the NGO's that we support are ZEWO certified. To receive the ZEWO certificate one must fulfill certain obligations laid out by ZEWO. (www.zewo.ch). If an organization is not ZEWO certified then we do a comprehensive background check.

16. How do I know if my donation reaches the receiver?

The projects are all implemented by the NGOs. The project manager of each specific project will write updates so that you can be informed about your project.

17. How does the NGO select the receiver?

The relief organizations, in conjunction with tabal, create sub-projects that are meaningful, and can stand alone outside of the larger project. They must also fit into the tabal presentation model.

18. How do I know that the receiver doesn't use the money for something else?

The NGOs commit themselves to finding reliable receivers and to control the money and project in a transparent fashion. This will be detailed in the updates that the NGOs have agreed upon as well as the annual audit the NGO files.
